Deer Harbor Wooden Boat Rendezvous 2021!

Tuesday, September 7, 2021

Update: 8/25/2021

Because of the recent resurgence of Covid-19 cases in San Juan County, the salmon dinner portion of this event is cancelled this year. Both the sailboat and rowing races will still take place, and the moorage discount from Deer Harbor Marina for wood boats attending the event is still in place. Participants are encouraged to use safe practices (including social distancing and masking) when on the docks.

For those that prefer to eat out after the rowing race on Tuesday, Matthew's Smokehouse and Deli will be open with outdoor seating, a 1/4 mile walk up the road from the marina.

Original Post:

Please join us! All wooden boats are welcome: oar, power, sail and steam. Wooden boats of all sizes attend the Rendezvous including kayaks, rowboats, motor launches, daysailers, cruising sailboats, and historic tall ships. Most boats moor at the Deer Harbor Marina, and are available for public viewing at no charge. The Rendezvous is a low key celebration of wooden boats, held in one of the most scenic harbors in the Pacific Northwest. Activities include the following:

Monday (Sept 6) Most boats will arrive by late afternoon. Tuesday (Sept 7) 1. Sailboat race starting at noon

Race instructions are posted below. Please attend the skippers meeting at 9 am on the dock!

2, Paddle/row race, starting at 4 pm

3. Dinner and music starting at 5:30 pm.

Held on the floats at Deer Harbor Marina. Grilled salmon, ice cream, beer, and wine will be available at a reasonable cost. Please bring your favorite side dishes to share in a potluck. We anticipate a great time and look forward to seeing many old friends and some new ones too.

New this year: Reserve your slip at the Deer Harbor Marina online at www.deerharbormarina.com. Look for the Dockwa button (a marina booking site) to enter your boat size and dates, etc.

Enter “wood boat” in the comments section and the price will be discounted upon reservation confirmation for the Rendezvous dates (9/6-7).

Race Instructions: The 2021 Deer Harbor Wooden Boat Race

Tuesday, September 7, 2021.

The race is a highlight of the Deer Harbor Rendezvous. All wooden sailboats are welcome (boats built of other materials are also welcome but are not eligible for prizes). The starting line will be ½ mile south of the Deer Harbor Marina. The marks of the course will consist of various islands and rocks in the area, as well as a race buoy located near the marina. GPS devices with charts installed are strongly encouraged.

The race entry fee of $15 per boat (and signed liability waiver) will be collected at the skipper's meeting, held on Tuesday at 9 am at the Deer Harbor Marina.

The race will start at noon and will have a three-hour time limit. Those without a current PHRF rating will have a temporary estimated rating assigned to them by race organizers. Non-racers are welcome to relax and socialize at the marina. The finish line will be established on a line extending to the west of the marina, for spectator enjoyment. We will attempt to have two laps of the course.

Prizes for first, second, and third place finishers will be awarded at the dinner on the evening after the race. Participant burgees will be available for sale, with proceeds to benefit the San Juan Islands Wooden Boat Society, which seeks to encourage wooden boat activities in the islands.

Contact Ward Fay at 360-376-5581 for more information about the race.

The Wooden Boat Society of the San Juan Islands would like to thank the following businesses for their most generous ongoing support for the Rendezvous:
Deer Harbor Marina Fisheries Supply
